5 Ways to Make Summer Count

By May 26, 2017 No Comments

What are you doing this summer? Are you and your family headed to the beach for some rest and relaxation? Are you a youth minister or youth group gearing up for summer camp? Maybe you’re a college student with road trips, local coffee shops and cold brew on your mind.

Regardless of your plans, the summer is approaching fast, and we want to encourage and remind you to serve. Colossians 3:23 states, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Here are five ways you, your family and/or your group can make your summer count by investing time and resources into children and families in need:

1 – Help feed children and families in need in Jacksonville.
Throughout the summer, our Jacksonville campus is hosting a feeding program for children and families in need. Along with nutritious meals, the children will enjoy activities such as Bible studies, crafts, recreation and more! We rely on volunteers for these events and need YOU to serve with us! Get involved by visiting the Compassion Ministries website or contacting Compassion@FBCHomes.org.

2 – Become a foster parent.
There are more than 10,000 children in Florida who need loving and stable homes. When you choose to foster a child, whether you are a millennial or an empty nester, you foster faith and adventure. Are you ready to be a foster parent? See if you meet the following guidelines and how you can start the process here.

3 – Help fight child sex trafficking.
The Porch Light exists to prevent and advocate for victims of domestic child sex trafficking. In 2014, The Porch Light opened a safe homewhere our expert, compassionate staff help child victims of sex trafficking find emotional, spiritual and physical healing.

Support The Porch Light by hosting a prayer vigil and/or giving. As an individual, family and/or group, commit to praying for The Porch Light. Or consider committing a special summer worship service or time to focusing on child sex trafficking. Pray for the victims, bring awareness to the cause, hold an offering to give towards The Porch Light and/or educate youth and other individuals.

4 – Sponsor a child.
When you sponsor a child through One More Child, you change that child and their family’s life forever. For just $35 a month, your money provides resources such as food, clothes, school supplies, medicine and educational opportunities. Also, you will be able to correspond with your sponsor child, providing a unique experience filled with love and support. We have great sponsorship needs in Colombia, Romania, Dominican Republic and our newest child sponsorship country, Tanzania!

5 – Serve in the Harold Clark Simmons Compassion Center.
In 2016, the Harold Clark Simmons Compassion Center was constructed to provide services to children and individuals in Polk County and the surrounding areas. Compassion Ministries relies heavily on volunteers of all ages. Imagine sorting and dispersing fresh produce and/or dry foods for children and families in need in Polk county. Or loading a container full of diapers, clothes and other needed items for one of the countries we serve. Every act of service makes a tremendous impact for One More Child. Get involved by visiting the Compassion Ministries website or contacting Compassion@FBCHomes.org.
