Adults' services
Florida Baptist Children's Homes provides care for adult women who have developmental disabilities. These are women whose mental development slowed down when they were youngsters.
The care is provided at the Children's Home campus in Lakeland, and the facility is known as the "Sonshine Residence." It can accommodate six women at a time for what is typically long-term care. One additional space is available for up to two weeks of "respite care."
During this time, family members have a respite or break from caring for their developmentally delayed loved one. The family may choose to take advantage of this service during times of illness, bereavement, vacation, or emergency.
Adult Day
Training program
The Lakeland campus also provides an Adult Day Training program for up to 22 developmentally delayed men and women. This service includes activities, and basic instruction in life skills and socialization.
Life skills may include how to safely cross a street at a traffic light, how to recognize public restrooms for the appropriate sex, how to avoid danger, where to go for help, personal hygiene, how to make appropriate food choices for a balanced diet, how to make a sandwich or a salad, how to use a microwave or stove. Higher functioning clients may be shown how to budget their money or balance their checkbook.
Examples of socialization skills: how to make a new friend, how to initiate a conversation with somebody, or how to greet someone.
