LAKELAND, Fla. – Will Wiggins had the opportunity to travel with his family on an international mission trip with the Florida Baptist Children’s Homes to the Children’s Malnutrition Center in San Juan, Guatemala.

The plight of the children made a lasting impression him. So much so, he returned home determined to do more for them. He immediately set about raising money and to date he has collected more than $6,400 for the Center.

“It was really sad to see those kids. We get pretty much whatever we want here, and they don’t really have anything at all,” Will said. “I went to my grandparent’s Sunday school class and gave a presentation with pictures of the kids and tried to raise money that way. I also sent letters to my aunts and uncles. I put a picture in with the letter too.”

Will has done a number of other things to raise money like selling some of his video games and donating his allowance.

“We’re so proud of him,” said his mother Amy Wiggins. “He has been doing all of this because he wants to and we support him all the way. He even started skipping lunch in order to save money. He said that he was doing it because some kids in Guatemala probably didn’t have lunch either.”

Ron Gunter, vice president of international childcare said that Will’s efforts are already making a significant impact on the Center.

“The children at the Center are in serious need of our help. The amount of support that Will has been able to raise is absolutely remarkable. His level of initiative and personal sacrifice is quite impressive and is making a real difference to the lives of the children at the Center,” Gunter said.

“Will and many other generous individuals have provided us with the resources to make numerous improvements to the Center. For example, we were able to completely remodel the old outdated kitchen, acquire new washers and a dryer for the laundry room, and install a new gas tank for the stove and dryers.”

“It’s been a real miracle. About a year ago the Center was only able to serve about 25-30 children, but now it is serving close to 50.” Will and his family attend McGregor Baptist Church in Fort Myers where he continues to raise support and awareness for the Malnutrition Center.
