LAKELAND, Fla. – Dr. Jerry Haag, president of the Florida Baptist Children’s Homes is enjoying a visit with a house parent couple on the Lakeland campus after the children have gone to school. The house parents are telling him about how one child in their care recently made a profession of faith and is planning to be baptized.

As Dr. Haag walks across the campus back to his office he openly shares his elation over the news. “We have so many things to be thankful for in this ministry, but the greatest victory this past year was having more than a hundred children in our care make Jesus Christ their Lord and Savior,” Haag said.

“This is the most fundamental part of our ministry: to bring children from a life of crisis to a life with Christ.”

The Children’s Homes has set a goal of $1.4 million for this year’s Mother’s Day Offering, which will go to support all of their ministry activities including residential care, emergency shelter care, adult developmental services, foster care, adoption services, safe families, the Sanctity of Human Life program, and international childcare missions.

Dr. Haag discussed the strong cooperative spirit he has experienced among churches and other supporters since he became president of the Children’s Homes in 2007.

“I have been so impressed by how the body of believers here in Florida support the Florida Baptist Children’s Homes. This ministry to hurting children wouldn’t be possible without the many volunteers that give of their time and energy on our campuses by helping with repairs to our cottages, tutoring our children, and assisting with other enrichment activities for our kids.”

“And of course, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without the prayers and faithful financial support of those who believe in our ministry. I am truly humbled by the sacrificial giving of our churches. Despite the challenges many are facing they still give so very generously, which allows us to raise up the fatherless in the name of Jesus.”

Last year the Children’s Homes served 8,673 children and families, which was a 67% increase in the number of children and families served the year before.

The Children’s Homes was established in 1904 by the Florida Baptist Convention and has continued to serve abused, neglected, and orphaned children ever since. The Children’s Homes is governed by a 24-member board of trustees appointed by the Convention.
